The Golden Age of Air Travel. When do you think that was? If you’re like most people, the phrase calls to mind images from 1960’s airline advertisements that feature nattily dressed flight attendants, luxurious amenities, and expansive seats with miles of legroom. It seems ridiculous to claim that we’re actually in air travel’s golden age now, given the rise of cramped economy-class seating and minimalist service, but airplane interior designer Anthony Harcup thinks that modern travelers don’t appreciate the services airlines provide.
The dirty little secret of luxurious 60’s air travel was that back then, air travel was an expensive option only affordable to a small percentage of Americans. A normal plane ticket from that time cost about as much as a modern first-class ticket when adjusted for inflation. Today’s cheap economy class tickets and budget airlines are responding to customer demand for affordable air fares. The slightly cramped accommodations are the necessary price to pay for being able to fly around the world cheaply and conveniently. Customers who want the ritzy 60’s flying experience can choose to pay 60’s prices for tickets.
