Ben Schlappig always knew he loved flying more than anything else in the world. He started getting into “The Hobby” of collecting airline miles to get crazy deals when he was a teen, spending one summer riding cheap domestic flights over and over to make sure his family’s annual trip to Germany would be a free one in first class. After discovering that a normal terrestrial life wasn’t really to his taste as a young adult, Ben did the unthinkable: he gave up his apartment, became voluntarily homeless, and started spending every night sleeping either in an airplane or at a luxurious hotel.
He spends much less on this lifestyle than he used to when he paid rent because of his savant-like ability to manipulate rewards programs to his advantage. He earns his income from blogging about his crazy life on the site “One Mile at a Time.”
Although you might lack the stomach for small print and the all-consuming wanderlust that Schlappig has, you can certainly use his life as an inspiration to travel more and try to spend less while doing it. Ben might be a little crazy, but he has lessons to impart for anyone who likes to travel a lot.
