Did you know that New Zealand actually sits on a belt of active volcanoes? It is this that makes the soil so rich, the ground so striking and the air so clear. That’s a great reason in itself to book flights to New Zealand.
But before you rush to make your booking you should consider going in off-peak season; this is when the effects of the climate and surroundings can be felt the most.
There are several things you should do before you book flights to New Zealand.
Fly Right
There are plenty of flights to New Zealand but you may be surprised to know that they are no international flight into Queenstown.
You can use this to your advantage by booking to leave via Auckland; this will give you the opportunity to spend a few days there and shorten the trip home.
You can do the same for your arrival or choose a different airport.
Pick Your Accommodation
Once you get to Queenstown you’re going to need to have accommodation. The city sits on Lake Wakatipu which is 50 miles long. You can opt for a hotel, such as the Eichardt’s Private Hotel; that will give you a fantastic view of the lake. Or you could try their self-catering apartments.
Cheaper accommodation is available without the view but you can still enjoy it with a short walk.
Choose Activities
If you like adrenaline then this is the place to be! Queenstown has a reputation as one of the best places to bungee jump, skydive or does a selection of other adventurous activities.
You may not have the time or the budget to fit everything in so choose what you want to do before you leave home.
You don’t need to do adrenaline based activities; you can enjoy a gondola trip or a variety of other more sedate pastimes.
Sample The Food
Americanos are the drink of choice for New Zealanders and a great way to start the day. But there are also many fantastic places to eat and drink while appreciating the natural beauty. Try the Lodge Bar or The Musket Room to get a real taste of authentic New Zealand food.
Don’t forget to test out the local wines; they are some of the best in the world!
Don’t Forget About Auckland
Finally, before you head home it’s worth taking a few days to explore Auckland. Even if you visit in the off-peak season you’ll find the temperatures are pleasant.
Be sure to grab a ferry across to Waiheke; it’s known for its oysters, wine and beaches. You also need to sample the authentic New Zealand bagels and bring some genuine New Zealand sweets home with you.
Sample a little history at the Auckland War museum before walking through the Auckland Domain and heading home.
