Mount Kazbek, a stratovolcano that is one of the Caucasus’ highest peaks, is a storied mountain in the culture of Georgia. The country’s version of Prometheus the fire-stealer is traditionally said to have been chained to this mountain by the gods for his punishment. Now at the site of his punishment there is an Orthodox hermitage. Visitors who climb Mt. Kazbek also get a chance to check out Gergeti Trinity, a 14th-century Georgian Orthodox church perched on the mountain face three hours’ hike from the nearest town.
