Traveling with a pet has become more common in recent years.
Commercial airlines have played a role, adopting safeguards that attract
families to fly the friendly skies with their dog or cat. In addition to discount airline tickets, at least one
of the major airlines awards a mile for each dollar spent when a pet is
transported in the cargo hold.
To travel in the plane cabin on most major airlines, pets
must weigh less than 20 pounds. An airline-approved carrier that fits under the
seat in front of the passenger must be used. Animals weighing 20 pounds or more
ride in the cargo hold with passenger luggage. Affix a label to the crate with
the flight number, destination, name, address, and phone number, and
destination address and phone number.
Look for cheap
airline tickets for nonstop, direct flights during the week when travel is
lighter. Make a reservation far in advance because only three pets are usually
permitted to fly in coach and accommodations are first come, first served. If
the animal will be transported with cargo, select an evening or morning flight
during warm weather to avoid excessive heat.
The day before the flight, begin cutting back on meals for
the pet. Feed only a light meal about two hours before departure. Trim the
animal’s nails to prevent injuries during crating. Freeze water in the crate
food bowl and attach it to the carrier. Before the plane departs, take the dog
for a long walk and do the same upon arrival at the destination.
The Travel Industry Association of America reported that
approximately 29.1 million people took their pets on vacation during the past
three years. Proper preparation allows both owner and pet to enjoy the flight.
