Paris’ metropolitan core is incredible, of course, but there are also amazing attractions to be found in the city’s laid-back suburbs. Artistically-minded travelers can commune with the spirits of past painters in Auvers-sur-Oise and Barbican, two towns within an hour’s drive of Paris that were artist colonies during the heyday of the Impressionists. If palaces and gardens are more your style, check out Vaux le Vicomte, the 17th century country manor that inspired Versailles.
