FAA
Allows Airlines to

Expand Use of Personal Electronic Devices

Before
you get on a plane and attempt to call grandma mid-air, let’s take
a closer look at what the FAA says.

In
October 31, 2013, The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal
Aviation Administration

(FAA) has determined that airlines can safely
expand passenger use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) in
airplane mode during all phases of flight.

  • Now,
passengers can use their smartphone, tablet, or e-reader.

  • But
there is still NO VOICE, NO CELLULAR.

  • PEDs
must be IN AIRPLANE MODE, or the Airplane’s Wifi may be used if
    offered.

  • Don’t
forget to stow heavy devices during takeoff and landing.

  • Listen
    to the safety briefing.

  • Follow
    crew instructions.

  • Rollout
of FAA’s rule will vary by airline.

To
know more about the rule, here are some Frequently Asked Questions on
FAA’s website.

According
to FAA, “Due to differences among fleets and operations, the
implementation will vary among airlines, but the agency expects many
carriers will prove to the FAA that their planes allow passengers to
safely use their devices in airplane mode, gate-to-gate, by the end
of the year.”

Some
airlines that are already implementing the new rule. Click on the
airline’s name for further information on their implementation.
