What was the first trip that you took that made you go, “wow?” The one that inspired you to throw away your excuses and start traveling like you meant it? The one that introduced you to the thrill of adventure? For Nomadic Matt, that trip was an under-planned excursion to Thailand. When he showed up to Southeast Asia as a young man, he was ill-equipped to travel in such an adventurous place. He got ripped off multiple times by street vendors and ate at McDonald’s because the local food was unfamiliar and scary. Although the experiences might have put him off of traveling forever, instead, they showed him how exciting traveling to unknown lands could be.
On that trip, he backpacked to Chiang Mai, where he met five other travelers who told him how he could travel for months at a time on a budget and inspired him to go home and quit his job so he could travel full-time. Now Matt is reconnecting to his traveling roots by recreating his fateful Chiang Mai trip from so many years ago. Maybe it’s time that you thought about the place that made you a world traveler and stopped by to reconnect as well.
