If you haven’t already, you should put Petra, Jordan on your travel bucket list. Petra is a Hellenic city filled with incredible ancient Greek-style architecture carved directly into the rocks of a valley in the middle of the desert. There’s literally nothing like it in the world.
If you take my advice and travel to Petra, you should keep some tips in mind. Buy a Jordan Pass to gain entrance to city instead of paying the one-day entrance fee. The Jordan Pass costs a little over $100 for a visa to enter the country, a 3-day pass to Petra, and entry into many other Jordanian tourist attractions. All of these things bought on their own would cost several hundred dollars. Book a hotel close to the entrance of the city, and use a driving service like Local Trips.net to get to Petra instead of expensive cabs.
When you get to Petra, Bedouin locals will pleasantly (but persistently) try to offer unofficial tours and rides on their carts or donkeys. Their services can be useful, and many of the people hawking services are honest, but there are plenty of scammers out their too. If you can stomach it, haggle with the locals to try to get prices down to reasonable levels, and use your common sense.
If you follow these tips, your experience in Petra will be just as magical as you imagine when you look at pictures.
