This may seem like obvious advice to the more seasoned travelers among you, but it is a useful tip just the same: don’t use a hotel room phone unless there is literally no other way for you to get in contact with someone and it’s an emergency. In the era of ubiquitous cell phones, there’s just no reason to use a hotel phone with rates that often hover around $30, $40, $60, or more for an hour of long-distance calling. Hotel phones should only be used as a last resort.
