Every traveler has dealt with the realities of jet lag, and how exhausting it can be. The exhaustion of travel and flying and travel and everything can hit you real hard the first night you fly. For the lack of a better term, it makes you too tired to sleep.
But it looks like it might not just be the fault of jet lag. A recent study from the Current Biology has found that there might be more than just exhaustion. The study found that the “first-night effect”, a phenomenon in science where sleep studies are always thrown off by the first night, affects most people.
When travelers end up somewhere new for the night, they’re brains remain active for longer. The study found that people, sleeping somewhere new for the first time, the left side of your brain remains vigilant because you’re in a new area.
