Seriously! It looks like someone painted a beautiful drawing of a classical country side, and now talking cartoon animals are going to be running around any second.
Considered a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), the small town of Sintra is perfectly nestled between two classic structures – the hillside Castelo dos Mouros and the brightly lit Pena Palace. Castelo dos Mouros is an eighth century outpost, overlooking the landscape at large. Definitely not for the faint of heart, even to reach the winding walls you have to scale a massive hillside, and up there? Be careful. One wrong step will send you flying down a cliff.
But if that adventure doesn’t appeal to you, then skip the battlements and go explore the gorgeous fifteenth century Pena Palace. It’s positively stunning, with intricate carvings lining the walls and bright colors slathered on the castle walls. And the view. The view from the Queen’s Balcony makes you feel like a Disney princess.
If you’ve ever wanted to explore a real life painting, then this is the place for you. Check out some breathtaking pictures of both castles, right here.
