When you think about the French countryside, what do you think of? The quiet meadows, the beautiful fields, a winding road moving past a bright blue river? Also, you should be thinking about sand dunes.
Seriously. It turns out that the largest sand dune in all of Europe is tucked away in the middle of France. It’s so large, it can be seen clearly from an airplane, but why would you be looking for it? For an untrained eye, it just appears to be a hole in the ground. But in reality, the La Grande Dune (roughly a one hour drive outside of the city of Bordeaux) is one of the most gorgeous places in the entire country. And considering that we’re talking about France here, that’s saying something. From it, you can see the Atlantic ocean, the mountains that separate France from Spain, and the stars in the skies. And it just keeps getting bigger, the dune expanding over whatever campgrounds are too close every year.
