The Lonely Planet Blog has a dispatch from a Melbourne-based correspondent talking about their recent lovely trip to Auckland. Although tourists in New Zealand often focus on exploring the country’s unrivaled natural beauty and trying to experience “Middle Earth,” the country’s largest city also has a lot to offer travelers.
The city is located by a stunning harbor and has great views of a nearby inactive volcano called Rangitoto. Auckland is made up of a collection of village-like neighborhoods that are great for strolling through on the way to catch an All Blacks game at a pub. No trip to Auckland would be complete without a walk along the beachfront promenade called Tamaki Drive. The walkway runs along the harbor through the affluent suburbs of Kohimara, Mission Bay and St. Heliers. Another great Auckland-area activity is a trip to the Matakana area, one of New Zealand’s up-and-coming wine growing regions. Travelers can get fresh and gourmet snacks at the Matakana Farmers Market before taking a tour of one of the region’s highly rated vineyards.
If you’re planning to embark on a “Lord of the Rings” inspired New Zealand trip soon, make sure to make some time for Auckland.
