There’s a tree in Sweden’s Fulufjallet National Park that holds an ancient secret. The scraggy Norway Spruce doesn’t look that impressive, but it’s one of the oldest living things in the world. The tree, called Old Tjikko by locals, is estimated to be 9,550 years old. That means it was around when humanity discovered agriculture, and was already over 2,000 years old when our ancestors figured out how to create metal tools. The towering tree took a long time to reach its currents height, spending thousands of years as a tiny shrub before the world’s climate became more amenable to large plants.
