What’s the best city in America to celebrate New Year’s in? Many people would say New York, with its Times Square ball drop and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Others might point to Miami and its famous club scene. While those cities are undoubtedly a fun place to welcome the new year, let me humbly direct you to an alternative: Boston.
Boston doesn’t necessarily have the wild parties that New York and Miami do, but it certainly doesn’t lack for things to do on the holiday. The best place in Boston to ring in the new year is Boston Common, the historic green space in the center of town. Every year on Dec. 31st the Common hosts First Night, a cultural event featuring over 200 performances that range from dance to live music to film. The celebration kicks off at 1 p.m. and lasts until the fireworks go off at midnight.
If you go to Boston for First Night, make sure not to miss out on the Grand Procession. This event allows you to become a performer by grabbing a handcrafted puppet and joining a parade running down Boylston Street.
If you want to have a New Year’s celebration surrounded by culture and history, Boston is the place to go.
