Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the vast protected underwater nature reserve that stretches from Michigan to the U.S./Canada border, has been a vital shipping lane in the Great Lakes for centuries. Also, true to its name, the region gets infamously stormy weather that has caused over 200 shipwrecks. Almost 100 of those shipwrecks have been identified and mapped, and visitors to the reserve are free to explore these historical vessels via diving, snorkeling, or boating.
