If you’ve ever travelled long distance on a plane you’ll know that they need to stop, generally to refuel. What can be really frustrating is knowing that you’re pausing in a fantastic place and won’t get to see any of it, except maybe the airport lounge.
In fact, this doesn’t need to be the case. Did you know that stopovers present the opportunity of being more than just a few hours? Most airlines will allow you to stay for a few days before continuing your flight!
Create Your Own Schedule
The starting point is locating flights from your starting point to your required destination. If you look at the flight options you should quickly note that most plans use the same stopovers. This isn’t surprising; it’s easier to keep all the resources in one place.
Find a good price for the flight to your chosen destination.
You can now use a multi-city search engine to look at two flights. You need to find one to the stopovers destination and a second flight to your final destination.
You must set the second flight on a different departure date to your arrival; this will ensure you get to see the city. Most airlines will allow you to stay in one place for up to a month!
You will find that the two flights are usually cheaper than the one ‘direct’ flight. Especially if you play with the dates slightly. The bonus is a few days or weeks in a city of your choosing.
Search Engines
There are online search engines which will take care of all the extra work for you. This will save you time as you simply need to enter your approximate departure dates and preferred destinations and they will show you all the available options.
These sites should also show you a cost comparison to the original flight choice.
Free Stopovers
You might be surprised to find that some airlines actually encourage you to stay for a night or more in the stopovers destination. They will actually offer you a free hotel stay while you ‘wait’ for a connecting flight!
Air Canada, FinnAir, Iceland Air, Wow Air, TAP Portugal, Air China, Singapore Airlines and Turkish Airlines are just some of the airlines which offer this facility.
Of course, you will need to check the terms and conditions with each airline before making a final booking.
With a little research, your holiday can become a stopovers adventure!
