After purchasing discount
airline tickets for overseas travel, there is much preparation to be done.
Travelers must get their passport in order, get travelers’ checks, and pack
their belongings. Safety precautions begin when packing for an overseas trip.
What is left out of the luggage is just as important as what is included.
Traveling light is recommended because it leaves a hand free
and eliminates the need to set luggage down unattended. Travelers should not
pack anything they could not stand losing. Valuable jewelry or baubles that
look expensive should be left at home, as should family heirlooms that are not
replaceable. Rather than taking all the credit cards, travelers should pack
just one or two and use travelers’ checks instead of cash.
Many of the items typically carried in the wallet should be
left at home such as a library card and Social Security card. The valuables
taken should be concealed in different places during transport. Storing them in
an outside pocket, fanny pack, or handbag makes them more susceptible to theft.
Storage in an inside pocket, a shoulder bag strapped across the chest, or a
money belt under clothes, is a safer choice.
Each traveler should make two copies of the discounted airline ticket, passport
identification page, driver’s license, and each credit card being taken. One
copy should be left with an emergency contact at home. The other should be
packed in a safe location in the luggage, away from where the originals are
being carried.
Recording the serial numbers of travelers’ checks leaving
one copy of this list with the emergency contact is recommended. Another copy
should be carried separate from the checks and as checks are cashed, the serial
number should be crossed off the list. To begin planning this overseas journey,
